If the power fails during day - time hours . . .
- Administrative staff will attempt to find out when electricity
will be restored and notify staff and patrons in the Main Library,
branch libraries, Institute for Regional Studies and University
Archives, and the off-campus storage facility.
- Circulation staff will institute security measures to take
the place of the automatic security gate by checking bags as people
leave.
- Reference staff will check if anyone is trapped in the elevators. If so, follow Elevator Malfunction procedures.
- Obtain flashlights and help patrons to relocate to better-lit
areas. Check bathrooms and other rooms for patrons needing assistance.
Emergency flashlights are available in most offices.
- Turn off all electrical devices, computers (both public and staff), monitors, copiers, typewriters, printers, etc.
If the power fails during evening hours or on a weekend, follow same procedures as above except:
- Call University Police at 1-8998 to find out when electricity
will be restored and notify staff and patrons at the Main and branch
libraries.
- In consultation with the Dean of Libraries or an available
Director, the reference librarian on duty will make the determination
whether or not to close the library.
- If the power fails anytime after 10:00 p.m., Circulation staff may close the building.
