Whenever a staff member has reasonable doubt that
he/she cannot control a situation at the time, the University Police
should be called. A "situation" may include the accusation or suspicion
that a criminal activity has occurred or is going to occur, the
personal behavior which may cause suspicion about an individual's
mental or physical health, or any event that may pose a danger to a
person's physical welfare or property.
Procedures for violence (assault, harassment, destruction of property, vandalism, problem patrons, theft, etc.)
- Observe the suspicious person, but do not attempt to detain him or her.
- Elicit support from your supervisor or co-worker.
- Whenever a staff member has
reasonable doubt that he/she cannot control a situation at the time,
call the University Police (Emergency: 911; Non-emergency: 231-8998).
You may be asked to remain on the line with the operator while the
police respond, so be prepared to do so.
- If a third party reports the problem, ask the person reporting to remain with you until the University Police arrive.
- When the Police arrive, be prepared
to provide them with any information you may have and to identify where
the problem is, as well as remain available at a safe location until
the matter is concluded.
- If you were able to handle the
matter without contacting the Police, obtain names, addresses, and
phone numbers of witnesses and others who were involved and provide
that information to your supervisor.
Remember, it is better to be
safe, so if you have any questions about the situation, please call the
University Police (231-8998 or 911).
